Twenty-Four Thoughts for Parents and Grandparents to Consider

    © 2024 Adults Saving Kids

    1. Be realistic about what your offspring are like at their core—inexperienced and sinful.
    2. Recognize and claim you are the irreplaceable people God has put in your offsprings’ lives.
    3. Find other ways of conversing with them without lecturing them.
    4. Watch out for glibly reassuring them otherwise when there is real harm or danger they must face.
    5. Be careful not to put aside what you need to notice and address.
    6. Always keep in mind they are children of God and help them see their identity in Christ, build them up to be followers of Jesus.
    7. Keep studying wisdom as in Proverbs and how you can impart that to your offspring.
    8. Be aware that your sins will have a deeper impact on their lives than you might expect.
    9. Be aware that your teachings, wisdom’ and prayers will have a deeper impact on their lives than you might expect.
    10. When they mess up, reflect on where you might have messed up in a similar way and share that so they can see the struggle we all have to deal with as sinners.  Loving them leads to confession and forgiveness.
    11. Learn and remember to tell stories that give them a new way to see how some challenges in life can be handled.
    12. Have them memorize certain Bible passages that they can refer to in many situations that come up in their lives, so they have truth to call on.
    13. Teach them to pray, to thank and rely on God in their decision making.
    14. Work with yourself to not have emotional reactions that drive them away, remembering listening first and being gentle goes a long way.
    15. Share with them about deceit, lying, slander, gossiping, breaking people down and teach them the value of building up one another.
    16. Talk to them of what manipulation and control is like which can be used against them so they can fend off evil when they are confronted by such.
    17. Help them think about establishing good boundaries that will serve them well and not shift unnecessarily their own sense of identity.
    18. Teach them about the gift of intuition and the importance of claiming their gut feelings which are (GUT) God’s Unspoken Thoughts.
    19. Seek to learn by listening how they are thinking, how they are feeling, what they are dealing with.
    20. Notice their interests and talents and enable them to build on those.
    21. Find ways to enjoy your children, to lead them into new experiences, to support their growth and whatever shows advancement in their maturity.
    22. Be ready to have conversations that regards their opinions and struggles as worthwhile.
    23. Pray for your offspring every day.  See Colossians 1:3-14.
    24. Find many different ways of helping them see what God has done for them, what their baptism means as adopted children of God, what hope and future that gives them, more important than anything else in life.

Quotes by Martin Luther and Others

    © 2024 Adults Saving Kids

From Martin Luther’s Preface to the Large Catechism:

If this were not enough to admonish us to read the Catechism daily, there is God’s command.  That alone should be incentive enough.  Deuteronomy 6:7,8 solemnly enjoins that we should always meditate upon his precepts whether sitting, walking, standing, lying down, or rising, and keep them before our eyes and in our hands as a constant token and sign.  Certainly, God did not require and command this so solemnly without reason.  He knows our danger and need.  He knows the constant and furious attacks and assaults of the devil.  So, he wishes to warn, equip, and protect us against them with good “armor” against their “flaming darts,” and with a good antidote against their evil infection and poison.  O what mad, senseless fools we are!  We must ever live and dwell in the midst of such mighty enemies as the devils, and yet we despise our weapons and armor, too lazy to give them a thought!

From Martin Luther Sermon, 25th Sunday after Trinity, Matthew 24: 15-28

But how can we keep from being deceived, since some of the deceptions which come our way are very compelling. How can we keep from being misled? To learn such mastery or art requires that we truly be Christians. First of all, we must recognize that the devil is a very crafty and powerful lord-that’s why he is called lord and ruler of the world! -and that if our dear Lord and God does not counter and thwart his craftiness, -cleverness, and power, there would be no one on earth wise, strong, and holy enough to withstand and survive against him. That is to say, with his knowledge, smartness, and power the devil far exceeds all human understanding and mental power. If God, therefore, were to withdraw his hand, the devil would quickly contrive an apparition before our eyes and take us in before we know it. From sermon, 25th Sunday after Trinity

    A Simple Way to Pray

Martin Luther fully recognized what we are addressing.  When he wrote A Simple Way to Pray for Master Peter, the Barber, he was fervent in identifying the meaning of the Third Petition of the Lord’s Prayer.  Listen to how Martin Luther saw the power of evil in the world. “Then say: O dear Lord, God and Father, thou knowest that the world, when it cannot frustrate thy name and wholly root out thy kingdom, employs tricks and frauds, carries on its many intrigues and strange plots, takes counsel, whispers, bolsters and fortifies itself, threatens and blusters, and proceeds with all evil will against thy name, thy Word, thy kingdom, and thy children to destroy them.

Therefore, dear Lord, God and Father, convert and restrain.  Convert those who should still acknowledge thy good will, that they with us and we with them may be obedient to thy will, ready in this obedience to suffer willingly, patiently, and gladly all evil, cross, and tribulation, learning therein to know, and test, and experience thy good, gracious, and perfect will.  But do thou restrain those who will not cease their raging, raving, hating, threatening, and wicked intent to do harm, and set to naught and shame their counsels, evil plots, and stratagems, that these may return upon their own heads, as Psalm 7 says.  Amen.”

The Estate of Marriage, volume 45 of Luther’s Works:

Most certainly father and mother are apostles, bishops and priests to their children, if they make them acquainted with the gospel.  In short, there is no greater or nobler authority on earth than that of parents over their children, for this authority is both spiritual and temporal.

See Smalcald articles where Luther talks about the “mutual conversation and consolation” of the saints as a way the Gospel extends “God’s guidance and help” into people’s lives.

From sermon on Matthew 6:25-7:11 “As St. Paul say about spiritual offices in Christendom (Rom. 12:8) ‘he who rules, let him be careful.”  In this sense the head of a household has to be concerned about whether his children are being brought up properly…if he neglects this, he does wrong.”

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

A mighty fortress is our God, A sword and shield victorious; He breaks the cruel oppressor’s rod and wins salvation glorious. The old satanic foe has sworn to work us woe!  With craft and dreadful might He arms himself to fight on earth he has no equal.

No strength of our can match his might!  We would be lost, rejected.  But now a champion comes to fight, Whom God himself elected.   You ask who this may be?  The Lord of hosts is he!  Christ Jesus, mighty Lord, God’s only Son, adored.  He holds the field victorious.

Though hordes of devils fill the land.  All threatening to devour us, we tremble not, unmoved we stand; They cannot overpower us.  Let this world’s tyrant rage; In battle we’ll engage!  His might is doomed to fail; God’s judgment must prevail!  One little word subdues him.

God’s Word forever shall abide, No thanks to foes, who fear it; For God himself fights by our side With weapons of the Spirit. Were they to take our house, Goods, honor, child, or spouse, though life be wrenched away.  They cannot win the day.  The Kingdom’s ours forever!

    Quotes by Others

Matthew 10:16 Jesus said, “See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise (prudent, shrewd, discerning) as serpents and innocent as doves.”

Edmund Burke “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way it treats its children”.   Nelson Mandela

“I’m a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn’t have the heart to let him down.”

    Abraham Lincoln

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”  Frederick Douglas

“The ultimate question for a responsible man to ask is not how he is to extricate himself from the affair, but how the coming generation shall continue to live.”   Bonhoeffer, After Ten Years, Dec. 1942“

Abraham Lincoln “If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first hour sharpening the ax.”

Longer quote from Luther’s Works 45:46

But the greatest good in married life, that which makes all suffering and labor worthwhile, is that God grants offspring and commands that they be brought up to worship and serve him.  In all the world this is the noblest and most precious work, because to God they can be nothing dearer than the salvation of souls.   Now since we are all duty bound to suffer death, if need be, that we might bring a single soul to God, you can see how rich the estate of marriage is in good works.  God has entrusted to its bosom souls begotten of its own body, on whom it can lavish all manner of Christian works.  Most certainly father and mother are apostles, bishops, and priests to their children, for it is they who make them acquainted with the gospel.  In short, there is no greater or nobler authority on earth than that of parents over their children, for this authority is both spiritual and temporal.

From sermon on Matthew 24:15-28, the Twenty Fifth Sunday after Trinity

Paragraph 20 But how can we keep from being deceived, since some of the deceptions which come our way are very compelling?  How can we keep from being misled?  To learn such mastery or art requires that we truly be Christians.  First of all, we must recognize that the devil is a very crafty and powerful lord—that’s why he is called lord and ruler of the world!—and that if our dear Lord and God does not counter and thwart his craftiness, cleverness, and power, there would be no one on earth wise, strong and holy enough to withstand and survive against him.  That is to say, with his knowledge, smartness, and power the devil far exceeds all human understanding and mental power.  If God, therefore, were to withdraw his hand, the devil would quickly contrive an apparition before our eyes and take us in before we know it

“To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.”

“Every man must do two things alone; he must do his own believing and his own dying.”

“The fewer the words, the better the prayer.”

“Reason is the enemy of faith.”

Here is a quote about Martin Luther written by R.C. Sproul, a popular theologian of the Reformed church in his commentary on Ephesians.  (He died in 2017 but still there are presentations of his in video on the web).  Here is his quote on pg. 108 in talking about modern theology. “Certainly, there will be new insights, new understandings, and applications of the word of God.  But I get far more out of reading Martin Luther’s understanding of the New Testament, than I do from contemporary scholars, who are so caught up in the latest fad in theology.

The question for us modern Lutherans is are we still listening to Luther?   I personally don’t see it or hear it.  We are not a praying church and Luther was a man of prayer.  We have very little emphasis on parenting and grandparenting.   Luther saw parents as bishops, apostles, and priests in their own home.  Anyone heard that brought out clearly in their congregation?Luther speaking to parents, “If God has given you a child who has the ability and the talents for this office, i.e. Pastor, and you do not train him for it, but look only to the belly and to temporal livelihood, see what a pious prig and small potato you are.”  See Luther’s Works, volume 44, pg. 130.

    Fear Stops Us:

    1. Don’t wait for the gifts to become obvious before you start using them.
    2. Don’t become so preoccupied or distracted with some substituting action that you never get to express what you were meant to do.
    3. Don’t put off till tomorrow what you could have done today.
    4. Don’t be trying to keep up with the Joneses.
    5. Don’t let the crowd tell you otherwise than what God has called you to do.

  • Twelve Reasons Why Talking About Human Trafficking Does Not Enroll People to Personally Do Something

    By Alvin Erickson

Twelve Reasons Why Talking About Human Trafficking Does Not Enroll People to Personally Do Something

    © 2023 Adults Saving Kids

    1. Denial is huge.  Family leaders strongly believe “It will not happen to my child.”
    2. It only happens to one out of 70 youth so not a major concern for parents.
    3. People have not made the connection between pornography, strips clubs, escort services or brothels and that many of those involved youth have been trafficked in one way or another.
    4.  Men unconsciously or consciously are members of the “Old Boys Club” so will protect their own perhaps without realizing they are doing so.
    5. Viewing pornography is widely accepted even among church members so many see it as part of life and at the same time media is not asserting that trafficking is involved.
    6. Most churches are not addressing either trafficking or pornography.
    7. Most families do not have good ways of talking about these things so conversations regarding the dangers and consequences involved are minimalized.
    8. There is a latent fear often of traffickers and what they might do if one gets too close to them.
    9. Much in the wider culture is telling women that pornography is here to stay and they need to live with it but still the underlying issue of men using trafficked women is not mentioned.
    10. Most people do not understand how in different ways youth are vulnerable and how professional traffickers are very effective in discovering and using that vulnerability against them.  How skillful and effective human traffickers are is not realized!
    11. Family leaders are not intentionally equipping their offspring with wise skills to avoid being taken in by all kinds of predators, including traffickers.
    12. There are few prayers said on behalf of those who could be victimized or those victims being used, those using them or for the traffickers themselves.

  • Am I a Man or a Wimp

    By Alvin Erickson

    Am I a Man or a Wimp

    © 2023 Adults Saving Kids

Being a wimp is not as hard as one might think.  Most of us men would never dream that we are a wimp. Perhaps we identify with the soldier that got the Purple Heart or Medal of Honor.  Perhaps there is some situation where we stood up for somebody or did something we consider heroic.   Has not some of that told us we are men of honor or courage?   The challenge we face is what is happening in our everyday lives where being a wimp has a great draw.  Let’s quickly take two Bible stories that can help us see what is involved.

One is told in I Kings 22.  Here we have the evil King Ahab with great desire to re-take a city that used to belong to his country.  He has 400 prophets telling him God is with him and he will be victorious.  No problem!   But visiting King Jehoshaphat from Judah asks King Ahab,  “Is there no other prophet to inquire of as well?”  King Ahab says, “There is one but he never says something that agrees with what I want.”  They talk and finally King Ahab sends for this prophet, Micaiah.   When Micaiah comes he first plays around with King Ahab assuring him he will go and be victorious.  But King Ahab is smart enough to catch a tone in Micaiah’s voice that seems fake.  So he tells Micaiah, “Tell me what you really think.”  Micaiah then tells King Ahab if you go you will never come back.  One of the 400 prophets then slaps Micaiah in the face.  King Ahab sends Micaiah to a prison.  But before he goes out, Micaiah sticks to his guns and repeats, “If you return, King Ahab, then I have not spoken the truth to you.”  King Ahab goes into the battle.  Although he camouflages himself, he is killed by an arrow shot randomly.  It turns out Micaiah told the truth God gave to him to say and 400 other prophets did not.  Were they not wimps in men’s clothing?   (Read the story for yourselves).

What does this story tell us?   It tells us 400 guys were wimps telling the king what he wanted to hear.  One guy, Micaiah, was a true man of God and had the courage to tell the truth.  He stood his ground.

Peter, Jesus’ disciple, was a man in many ways.  He earned his living by fishing.  He boldly followed Jesus, asked questions that took courage, spoke the truth that came to him.  He had real will power.  Before Jesus was arrested, he said he would follow Jesus even unto death.  But Jesus warned him Satan meant to have him and would sift him like wheat.  He would deny Jesus three times before the cock crowed.  So, what happened?   At the courtyard where ‘Jesus was being tried, he denied knowing Jesus three times and this he stated to servant girls. In this instance he was a wimp.

We all are going to be wimps some times in our lives.   We know that.  And it is likely our kids, if we have some, will witness at least one of those times.  We give into something or someone and we do it for some wrong reason—wanting to impress, afraid of something, looking for a favor, lacking courage, not trusting God.

Jesus showed us how to be a man—courageous, compassionate, serving, leading, authentic, fearless, patient, loving, joyful, in control fending off evil.  But to be that man we need the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit.  Let us call for the Holy Spirit every morning so when that moment comes to be a man, we can be that man and not a wimp.

  • Messages for Boys and Young Men to Consider

    By Alvin Erickson

Messages For Boys and Young Men to Consider

    © 2023 Adults Saving Kids

    1. Sexual desire is a very strong urge, it only seems to be an overpowering urge.  The so-called “sex industry” operates on the principle that if anyone can be brought to focus only on desire, on sexual feelings, proving oneself a viral man ready to satisfy those desires, much money can be made.
    2. Each man has situations come up in life where a man can turn off his mind and forget his faith and calling and just follow his natural sexual desire hoping no major negative consequences will develop. Some men like Joseph actually remembered God (Genesis 39:9,10) and count the cost of following their desires and decide to take measures which would keep them from further involvement. Jesus put severe statements in front of us to get us to think before using and harming others. (Matt 18:5-7).
    3. There is a lot of talk about masculinity that would suggest that being sexual whenever the opportunity presents itself is a sign of manliness. Many men will use this to shame other men or confuse them. Self-control, respect for others, long term consequences are overlooked.  The conversation revolves around being a stud or scoring.   The fallacy of this argument becomes most apparent when one thinks, of one’s own sister or mother as being the person who would be used. Is it so important to “prove” myself that I need to use someone?  Many women are available but have they been molested or trafficked?
    4. One can get into places or with groups where there seems to be nothing to do but go along with the crowd. Do I want to be there and what can I do to avoid these situations?
    5. There are Christian young men who actively go to strip clubs or download pornography from the Internet. They argue this is okay. What they have believed is the messages of the sex industry. What they haven’t noticed is what has happened before in the lives of those they are using and what people in the background are slyly making money off their behavior by arranging for their “entertainment”?
    6. There is a real possibility of developing habits when young which cannot be easily turned off and which will result in much agony later. Especially these habits can affect a marriage relationship and a father’s relationship to his children.  So these are serious life issues.
    7. An abused young woman may very often be promiscuous or available for money. She is often not aware of how the previous trauma has affected her. One possibility is to respect her even though she might not respect herself at this point of time, she can be seen as a person of God like Jesus saw the cheating tax collector Zacchaeus as a child of God. (Lk: 19:1f).
    8. Like quicksand, the sex industry pulls us gently into a world we are not ready for and which seems at first so alluring. The harm it can cause is not immediately apparent. When we are anxious or depressed, it is an easy world to turn to. Jesus asks us to be wise, even shrewd and think about outcomes before stepping in. He understands our normal human inclinations will lead us down a wide path towards immediate gratification and long-term self-destructiveness.
    9. As with young women, many young men are also vulnerable. Fear, taunts, bullying, confusion drive them to follow others. Some are harassed, abused, raped, put down, bullied or objects of derision. This can lead them to situations of trying to make it on their own in a scary world. To keep going they may feel forced to sell themselves. Shame and lack of options may keep them doing something they never expected. Chemicals may lessen the pain but also drive them to keep doing what they never intended. Look for solid, caring support first.  There is good help even if one is caught in a trap.

  • Prepare Your Kids, No Heartaches, Please!

    By Alvin Erickson

Prepare Your Kids, No Heartaches, Please!

    © 2022 Adults Saving Kids

I was speaking at a church in Turner, Montana.  One of the things I said at the beginning was that one of my daughters was the victim of a human trafficker.  Then I went on to talk about what we must say and do to prepare our beloved youth so that bad and wrenching things do not happen to them.  At the end of our time together, a motherly woman put her hand up.  She said, “I don’t know if I dare ask this, but I wonder how is your daughter now?”  This question set me back.  I was not ready for it.  So, I had to explain that my daughter was in a building she would never have been in had she not been trafficked.  She was caught in a fire there and though she was brought to an excellent burn unit, the doctors told us they would not be able save her from all her burns.  We had to decide to let her go. Sadly, we did.

The response from the crowd was immediate.  A man stood up and gave me a big hug and he called the group to gather around me and then said a comforting prayer.  Love and compassion flowed.  In this website we are talking about potential heartaches.   This is what none of us want.  But guess what, more families are experiencing such anguish and misery than we can ever imagine.   What does a child live with who has been molested?  And their families?  Or one who becomes addicted to drugs or to Internet pornography?  There is so much hurt going on in young people’s lives and yes, in their families.   We could go on and on bringing out the agonies caused by suicides, teenage pregnancies, abusive marriages, bullying and cyberbullying., etc.  Kids, parents, grandparents living with many more heartaches than ever gets noticed or talked about publicly.

So what can be done?  The big word is this: “Preparation”.   What does this mean for us who don’t want our kids and yes, ourselves, to live with heartaches?   It means looking at stories where nasty things happen to kids and then asking, “How could my child be better prepared to handle such a situation and avoid the trap, the pain that will be coming next?  What can I do to prepare those young people I care about that will actually make a difference?   Can someone help me find the tools, the wise skills I need to share with my offspring?”  How then can I get such wise skills into the actual thinking of my loved one?   How can I prepare them to the point they can draw on these wise skills when they need them?

Brothers and sisters, family leaders, here is the good news.  We have done the work to discover wise skills you will need to pass on to the youth you care about.  Many good authors, many good stories, much wisdom from the Bible all have been located so you will have good tools, sharp weapons, effective responses to work with.  It will take real work on your part to involve yourself in a course with other family leaders present.   But is not this a war worth winning?   Not only do your young people need to know these skills but they need to practice them.  That will take concerted effort.  If a person picks up a basketball for the first time, will they be able to make a basket right away?   Probably not!   But if they practice, they will get better at making baskets.   The same is true when we think about responding to risky situations.   One needs to practice wise skills, how to use effective tools, if one is going to avoid the traps other people set. Also our beloved youth must themselves decide they do not want to be fooled. All of us would say we love our kids.  We are concerned for their safety and their futures.   But have we considered what it will take to bring them through the minefields they face?   Is our love deep enough, effective enough to actually get them prepared for all they will face?   Give yourself the right to make a good decision about this.   The time you take, the effort you spend can save your child and you from long lasting heartaches.   God is on your side.  Make the most of the opportunities this website and the course offered affords.

Fifteen Things to Know and Do to Not Get Trafficked or Aid Traffickers

Start with a short look into how we are vulnerable See (Ways Youth Can Be Vulnerable to Human Traffickers) on this website.  Don’t lack preparedness.

1 Notice, observe, draw back and take in what is happening.  Too many details?

    2. Too good to be true, someone comes into your life & says all the right things.

    3. Have your own support group (family, friends, mentors, etc.) that lessens your need for love, caring, attention and compliments from someone else.

    4. Claim your intuition, recognize how your intuition is really a gift to help you.

    5. Always consult with someone you trust before making a big decision.

    6. Be wise, be shrewd, be prudent, don’t allow yourself to be hurried.  Think through consequences.  Be aware of brain development, an immature pre-frontal cortex fails to see consequences, sometimes lacks good judgment.

    7. Take someone with you if you are putting yourself into a risky situation.

    8. Don’t get manipulated into doing something that supports the trafficker.

    9. Remember who you are in Christ, a child of the eternal God, which is what you stand for.   Connivers seek to attack one’s sense of their identity and shift it.

    10. Always keep in control.  Don’t let charming, niceness, smooth talk sway you.

    11. Remember you never are obligated to in some way return the favor given you.  Setting up a need to return a favor is a favorite ploy of a manipulator.

    12. Look out for person who can’t take “No” for an answer.  It is time to run!

    13. Learn to say “No” firmly.  Don’t add a reason.  “No” is a complete sentence.

    14. Confirm: Know name, address, phone everything you can about this person.

    15. Ask penetrating questions, inquire of God.  Put schemer on the defensive.

(Some Scripture passages like Isaiah 58:6-12, II Samuel 13; Luke 20, Genesis 3; Proverbs 1-7; Matthew 10:16; Luke 4:18, 19; Ephesians 1, 4 and 6 can guide us).

  • Discernment, The Art of

    By Alvin Erickson

    Discernment, The Art of

When people tell you that you are a discerning person, what do they observe that has them say that?  To be discerning means a person has the awareness and the knack of choosing between two things.  One of those things is not going to be good for a person.   One of those things is going to be better for the person and offer a safer and more nurturing outcome.

Jesus was discerning.  Some of the Pharisees and leaders were seeking to set him up for failure, for getting himself in trouble by something he would say.  Noticing this he did not fall for their charming pretense.  (See Luke 20:20-26) Their intent was to trap him into saying something off-color that would show he was a fraud.  His intent was to see through their entrapment tactics and then say and do what confounded them for he spoke the truth.

When we consider this, we ask ourselves this question: When are we asked to be discerning and pick between two ways of dealing with a situation?   The parable of the Good Samaritan helps us think about one way.  Two men passed by the man beaten and robbed who lay by the side of the road.   The Good Samaritan came along, saw the man, saw his need and discerned that this was not a set-up.  There were no men hiding in the bushes waiting to come out and attack him.  So he ministered to the man, poured oil on his wounds.  Then he took him to an inn and paid for the days the man would need to be there in order to heal.   He treated the man best he could.

This gives us a simple way to talk about discernment.   Trick or Treat!  When one is confronted by a situation, one must discern.   Is someone seeking to trick me, to deceive me, to take advantage of me?  Or is there actually a need there and no danger of being tricked?  Let us realize this is a tough call.  This means we need to be talking about discernment many times and help our offspring think about this as well.  The book of Proverbs clearly helps us here.  It is aimed to give wisdom to the simple-minded.  It elevates the importance of wisdom as a gift more precious than gold or silver.  Proverbs recognizes one can get oneself in a jam just by going along with someone’s request or proposal.   There will always be someone we meet up with, who has an ulterior motive but who is nice on the front end.

Some people are good at scheming.  They can make things seem very normal, very engaging, even compelling.  So why would a person not go along with them?   They would also use “urgency” as a way of getting their victim to do what they are proposing.   Listen to many advertisers and notice how often they are using deadlines and promotions to get a person to act quickly.  So quick that there is no time to consult with another person and discern what is going on.  Luther sees Satan as behind this deception.Proverbs 4:23 exhorts us to “Keep or guard your heart with all vigilance, for from it flows the springs of life.”  If we are not discerning we can find ourselves in a deep hole that’s very hard to get out of.   But here is the challenge.  Discernment does not come easily.   There is quicksand on the road of life and many find themselves in it.  Jesus says there is a narrow way that leads to real life and a broad way that leads to destruction.  So there is much at stake when we are talking about discernment.  Proverbs tells us we need to work with our offspring and help them become discerning so they treat when that is actually needed but they do not let themselves become tricked and then used or wounded unnecessarily.   Jesus tells us in Matt.10:16: “See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”  To be wise as serpents is to be discerning. Are we ready to be trained in discernment?   How important is this matter to you and your beloved youth?
